What We Do
Seven integrated programs working together to restore ecosystems and improve livelihoods across Elgeyo Marakwet County.
REMEI takes an integrated approach to conservation and development. Our programs are interconnected — improving water resources supports agriculture, which improves livelihoods, which reduces pressure on forests, which builds climate resilience. Every program reinforces the others.
01Water & Soil Conservation
Securing water and land for future generations
Our water and soil conservation program addresses the critical challenge of land degradation in Elgeyo Marakwet County. Through community-led watershed management, terracing, and riparian zone restoration, we protect the region's precious water sources and build long-term agricultural resilience.

02Landscape Restoration & Climate Resilience
Rehabilitating degraded lands through nature-based solutions
The Elgeyo Marakwet escarpment is one of Kenya's most ecologically important landscapes. Our restoration program combines large-scale tree planting, agroforestry, and natural regeneration to rebuild forest cover, restore biodiversity corridors, and strengthen the region's resilience to climate change.

03Gender Equity & Social Inclusion
Empowering women and youth to lead conservation
Sustainable conservation is impossible without the full participation of all community members. Our gender equity program ensures that women, youth, and marginalized groups have equal access to resources, decision-making roles, and economic opportunities within REMEI's programs.

04Education & Capacity Building
Building the knowledge base for lasting change
Knowledge is the foundation of sustainable change. Our education program equips farmers, community leaders, local government officials, and youth with the skills, tools, and confidence to steward their environment effectively and advocate for their communities.

05Community Empowerment & Sustainable Livelihoods
Creating economic opportunities that protect nature
Poverty and environmental degradation are deeply interlinked. Our livelihoods program creates sustainable income-generating opportunities that reduce community dependence on destructive resource extraction, while simultaneously protecting and restoring the natural environment.

06Biodiversity Conservation
Protecting the unique ecosystems of the escarpment
The Elgeyo Marakwet escarpment is home to remarkable biodiversity, including numerous endemic and threatened species. Our biodiversity conservation program works with communities to protect critical habitats, monitor wildlife populations, and reduce human-wildlife conflict.

07Disaster Preparedness & Response
Building community resilience to climate shocks
Elgeyo Marakwet is increasingly vulnerable to climate-related disasters including floods, landslides, and prolonged droughts. Our disaster preparedness program builds community capacity to anticipate, prepare for, and recover from these shocks before they become crises.
