Africa thriving cannot wait.

Biography

Dr Elizabeth Katam is a distinguished education scholar, development leader, and environmental advocate committed to advancing sustainable development and community resilience in Kenya and across Africa. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Curriculum Studies from Kenyatta University, where her work focuses on strengthening education systems to respond to the demands of the 21st-century economy and drive inclusive socio-economic transformation.

With extensive experience in academia and education leadership, Dr Katam has played an active role in supporting the implementation and administrative processes of Kenya's Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), helping align education with practical skills, innovation, and national development priorities. She has also contributed to national and regional research on gender and economic empowerment as a member of the Technical Working Committee for the Women Economic Empowerment Index (WEEI) study at the Kenyatta University Women's Economic Empowerment Hub. In addition, she serves on several School Boards of Management, providing strategic guidance on governance, education quality, and institutional development.

Driven by a deep commitment to environmental stewardship and social justice, Dr Katam is the Founder and Executive Director of the Restoration of Elgeyo Marakwet Escarpment Initiative (REMEI), a community-based organisation dedicated to restoring degraded landscapes and strengthening sustainable livelihoods. Under her leadership, REMEI promotes ecosystem restoration, climate resilience, sustainable agriculture, and community capacity building, working closely with local communities, government institutions, and development partners to address land degradation, food insecurity, and environmental challenges.

Dr Katam is particularly passionate about empowering rural communities, especially women and smallholder farmers, to adopt nature-based solutions that improve food security, restore ecosystems, and build resilient local economies. Her leadership reflects a belief that sustainable development must be locally driven, inclusive, and rooted in community ownership.
